Each Saturday in May at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Fort Smith National Historic Site will present a program about the realities faced by soldiers in battle during the Civil War and fire a replica cannon.

Clayton Conversations: Precious Tombstones from Yesteryear, Revived!

Learn about this area’s premier example of historic tombstone restoration. Walking through old cemeteries is a favorite hobby of many, and conservationist Randy Smith, manager of the Van-Alma Edwards Funeral Home, will lead you on a fascinating “stroll” with a special slideshow presentation. Smith has brought new life to the headstones of Van Buren’s earliest settlers in the 10-acre Fairview Cemetery.
Learn of the stories that cemeteries can tell and appreciate the beautiful family information gleaned more easily today because of Smith’s dedication in saving these historic structures. Celebrate Arkansas Heritage Month, whose theme is “Saving Our Historic Structures,” by learning about this rich – and enduring – source of area history. Since 1933, Fort Smith has been home to one of Arkansas’ most exciting rodeos. Each year cowboys from all over the world compete for one of the largest prize purses in Arkansas. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the rodeo. You’ll see some of the rankest bulls and broncs in America. Events include Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Bareback Riding, Calf Roping, Barrel Racing and Steer Wrestling, Mutton Busting and more! Plus don’t miss the FREE entertainment on the Choctaw Casino stage and nightly performances by the Old Fort Days Dandies!
