An Arkansas National Guard spokesman says an unconfirmed tornado struck the Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center near Fort Smith at around 3:00pm, this Wednesday afternoon, causing substantial damage to approximately 20 barracks buildings on the post. No buildings were destroyed, most had roofs damaged and siding peeled off.
As of 8:00pm this evening, all Soldiers from the post, as well as approximately 1,100 Army Reserve Soldiers participating in a two-week training exercise at the facility were all accounted for and no injuries are reported.
The damaged area consists of a four-block area near the center of the post. At around 9:00pm, power was still out to approximately half of the main post area due to numerous transformers and power lines down.
Fort Chaffee engineering and Soldiers from several units have begun picking up the debris and clearing streets so that power crews can access the damaged area to perform repairs.
